Trip to Abilities Centre, Whitby Ontario

As promised, I am excited to tell you about my experience at the Abilities Centre in Whitby!  This is a community centre that is fully accessible to people of all abilities.

The gym is amazing!  Mini computers are accessed with a personalized fit card on every machine.  It will show you how many reps and sets you should be doing based on your fitness test.  It will also count your reps so there is no need to focus on more than one thing at a time.  Don’t worry about changing your weights manually.  All equipment uses compressed air resistance technology which makes your workout safer and easier.  They have an amazing spin studio and cardio area set up in the middle of the running track that also caters to persons with disabilities.  Wheelchairs for the track are available as well.

Also located is this facility is a Sensory Room customized for those dealing with the challenges of Autism.  Included is LED lighting, tactile walls, bubble tubes, sensory tables and more.  Quite impressive.

A Life Skills Apartment designed to assist in independent living is also a key factor in the development of this centre.  It includes hoyer lifts in both the bedroom and bathroom with a full kitchen and living area.

They have also launched  a day program for persons living with a disability called Thrive.   Which sounds like an exciting and challenging experience.  It will take members through a wide variety of classes.  Everything from drama to fitness has been incorporated in this program.

I am excited about this project and encourage all of you to visit this facility!
